Physical & Scientific Properties of Smoky Quartz
Posted by WILL PONDER
Smoky Quartz is the name given to Quartz crystals that have been naturally irradiated and appearing a brown color ranging from light tan and very dark brown. Its color is due to gamma irradiation and the presence of traces of aluminum built into its crystal lattice. Crystals found in pegmatites and alpine-type fissures are typically a single color, whereas crystals from other environments often show a color zonation in the form of multiple phantoms. In scepters and skeleton quartz, the color may be more intense along the edges of the crystal.
Smoky quartz can be found in many places but is most often seen in geological features like granite and pegmatite.
It makes an excellent meditation stone, as it has a calming, grounding effect.
Formula: SiO2(silicon dioxide)
Physical Properties: Mohs hardness of 7 [Very Hard], with a Trigonal crystal structure (three sided). Very common in the Earth's crust and comes in many varieties like smoky quartz.
Common uses for smoky quartz is for jewelry, home & office decor, and meditation.
Many cultures consider smoky quartz a stone of clarity and protection. It is said to balance body energy and bring harmony in relationships, protect against negativity while repulsing bad energy.
