Andalusite: Stone of Clarification:

Andalusite, Chiastolite, Staurolite, Fairy Cross, Cross Stone…many believe these to be similar, or some the same, or all completely different…whatever name one uses to refer to this incredible mix of minerals, they are all in fact correct!

It seems that our Fairy Stones, are named Chiastolite, which is a pseudomorphic version of Andalusite. The specimens of the Cross Stone are actually often found within larger specimens of Andalusite, which is a polymorphic version of Staurolite.

Meaning that Staurolite created Andalusite, then a version of Andalusite under pressure with dark inclusions is called Chiastolite, Cross Stone, Fairy Cross and Fairy Stone.  Please see Scientific Information for a more detailed description.

The twin crystal inclusion are sometimes referred to a “Fairy Crosses” as it was once believed to be created by the tears of the fairies who were unable to control their crying when they heard of the crucifixion of Jesus.  It was also considered a good luck charm to prevent children from evil spirits, therefore named “Fairy Stones” to be more appealing to the children and ensure they would keep them on.

The name Chiastolite is said to be derived from the Greek chiastos meaning ‘cross marked’; other names for this stone are Crusite, Crucite, and Lapis Lucifer.

What are the Scientific Properties of Andalusite?

Mohs Hardness of 7.5 with a orthorhombic crystal structure

Staurolite –>Staurolite  through pressure passes by imperceptibly by degrees (pseudomorph say some polymorph say others ) into a hydrous species of Andalusite.   The Staurolite inclusions are preserved within the Andalusite, which suggests that Staurolite grew before Andalusite and was later consumed by a reaction of pressure and environment, which in turn produced Andalusite.

NOTE: polymorphism is the ability of a solid material to exist in more than one form or crystal structure.

Andalusite –> Andalusite through varying pressures may polymorph into Kyanite and Sillimanite therefore they are rarely found together in the same rock specimen. Andalusite though changes once again.

Chiastolite –>pseudomorphically altered by muscovite, paragonite and margarite; is generally found in porphyroblasts (of andalusite) and presents as the light brown with the darkly crossed stone.  It is the calcium rich margarite that tends to form along the graphite rich crosses or bands within the the Chiastolite creating the striking feature.

NOTE: A porphyroblast is a large crystal that is surrounded by a finer-grained matrix in a metamorphic rock. Porphyroblasts form by the recrystallization of existing mineral crystals during metamorphism.

So, it seems that our Fairy Stones, are named Chiastolite, which is a pseudomorphic version of Andalusite. The specimens of the Cross Stone are actually often found within larger specimens of Andalusite, which is a polymorphic version of Staurolite.  Meaning that Staurolite created Andalusite and a version of Andalusite under pressure with dark inclusions is called Chiastolite, Cross Stone, Fairy Cross and Fairy Stone.

It is the clear variety of Andalusite that was first found in Andalusia, Spain that is the most viable to be cut correctly into the dazzling multi-colored, faceted gemstone.  Other sources for all specimens are Sri Lanka, brazil, Canada, Russia, Australia and the US.  Many varying locations claim to be the “only” resource for what is specifically called the “fairy stone”.
