As the name suggests, Moonstone is strongly connected to moon and to intuition as well. It is also first and foremost a women’s stone, directly associated with the Mother Goddess. Like the moon, this stone’s reflective schiller reminds one that as the moon waxes and wanes through a natural cycle, as do we.
Moonstone has also been called Water Opal, Fish Eye, and Wolf’s Eye, and has long considered to have inherent insoluble connections to the moon and it’s energies by all ancient cultures familiar with this glorious gemstone.
It is said that in India, the Moonstone (named Candra Kanta in India) is quite sacred, only permitted to be displayed on a yellow cloth. It is told in this culture that the moonlight form a full moon give the gemstone magical occult powers, believed to bring much good fortune and allowing one to see into the future.

Moonstone is the opalescent variety of Orthoclase, which is an alkali feldspar. With a blue or white sheen, (referred to as a “schiller”), it has an appearance rather like the shine of the moon, hence it’s name. The sheen is created by the reflection of light from the internal structure of very thin layers of Albite. While the thicker layer of Feldspar is what creates the white color.
Sri Lanka, the classical of origin for Moonstone, is known to shimmer pale blue on an almost transparent ground. Specimens from India, though, show cloudlike plays of light and shade on many other colors such as beige brown, green, orange or simple brown background.

It is said to change it’s luster with each phase of the moon, being brighter during the waxing to full, and darker from waning to the new moon. Moonstone should be carried on the person, and discharged among dry tumbled Hematite after menstruation. It is best recharged on the window sill when the moon is full. The most beneficial time would be from moonrise to moonset, and more quickly when in a crystal dish or with crystals nearby.
