Wear topaz only if one wishes to be clear-sighted; as legend is told it dispels all enchantment and helps to improve eyesight as well. The name Topaz comes from the Sanskrit and meaning fire. The Egyptians said that Topaz was colored with the golden glow of the sun god Ra. This made topaz a very powerful amulet that protected the faithful against harm. The Romans associated Topaz with Jupiter, who also is the god of the sun.

The ancient Greeks believed that it had the power to increase strength and make its wearer invisible in times of emergency. Topaz was also said to change color in the presence of poisoned food or drink. Its mystical curative powers wax and wane with the phases of the moon.

Perhaps the most famous is a giant specimen set in the 17th century Portuguese Crown, (1,640 carats) the Braganza as it was named, was first thought to be a the largest diamond ever found, later it was discovered to be a colorless Topaz.

Topaz is a quite a hard gemstone, but it can be split with a single blow, a trait it shares with the diamond. As a result it should be protected from hard knocks.

Topaz occurs in a range of different colors, a deep golden yellow and pink topaz are, by far, the most valuable. Blue and green stone are also quite popular in modern terms. Natural pink stones are rare, most are simply heat treated yellow stones. Much colorless topaz is irradiated and heat treated to create a range of blues, some almost indistinguishable from aquamarine when seen with the naked eye.

Brown, yellow, orange, sherry, red and pink topaz is found in Brazil and Sri Lanka. Pink topaz is found in Pakistan and Russia.

Pale topaz which is enhanced to become blue is found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and China.

Topaz is another stone used for protective purposes, it is considered specifically against envy, intrigue, disease, injury, sudden death, sorcery and negative magic as well as lunacy.
